Tom Sime's work has taken on an experimental feel, as if each of his finished pieces were a highly evolved sketch from an encaustic artist’s notebook.
Interested in the translucence of wax and its ability to rest on top of a surface and partially obscure it, Sime's ongoing body of work has continued to develop around this phenomenon. He often lays a thick layer of wax over a relief of geometrically governed networks, forming structures that are only partially available to the viewer and suggest a continuation of the incomplete motif.
Sime's work triumphs with subtle reserve, looking to minimalist and op-art precedents to create a subdued but enduring visual experience.
