“I like to work on many paintings at the same time. I tend to work on them over long periods of time. I do not look at external sources when I paint; I rarely use reference material in the studio.

Paintings often start with intuitive explorations and discoveries that establish a foundation, followed by a longer process of becoming familiar with what’s there and working through options and layers that address the compositional issues faced.

Through observation and the hours spent living with the composition, I begin to understand it, what it needs and how to deliver those needs. The entire process is directed at moving out of arbitrariness into purpose, leading to a point where the painting becomes self sufficient and complete."
