RUBBISH! Art and the Ecosystem, an exhibition of Westchester artists who utilize industrial detritus as well as materials derived from nature, invites viewers to investigate the state of our natural world and ask, "Do these leftovers represent a future of hope or despair for the land on which we live?" Through found and relegated items, these artists have created sculptures, installations, assemblages and drawings that spur thought and dialogue about the distressed world. Metals, wood, bone and fiber are paired with plastics, electronics and car parts to create elegant, striking, often uncomfortable works that question our relationship to natural resources, urbanism, sentimentality and personal values. These artists look to the history of the objects they use for understanding and answers. They find hope in storm felled trees; discover beauty in scrap steel; reminisce through driftwood and felt; advocate for change with paper and sand.
