“Although I have lived in the South most of my life, I became more of a Southerner after living in New York City for two years. I was frequently asked: ‘Tell about the South. What’s it like there? What do they do there? Why do they live there? Why do they live at all?’ And it was during my trips home that I began to examine the culture that I had ignored, rebelled against, and taken for granted.”
